ROUNDABOUT N655
In 2020, the Province of Zeeland has decided to request a single request for the roundabout N655/Heuvelsweg on Schouwen-Duiveland within the major maintenance contract in order to apply an innovative product. Partly thanks to MKI, a Steen Mastic Asphalt top layer with 50% recycled asphalt was chosen for the Kerkwerve roundabout (N655) project for the first time.
The work consists of replacing the cover layer (or top layer) with SMA circular product. An ideal location for this type of asphalt, because it can withstand twisting traffic at roundabouts and intersections, for example.
Summary
Contracting Authority: Province of Zeeland
Contractor: KWS infra Roosendaal-Sas van Gent
Period: The assignment was delivered March 24, 2021
Biobased products:
SMA circular is an application of 50% recycled SMA (stone or split mastic asphalt)
The biobased products contribute to the SDGs
SDG 8
The work was carried out by a local contractor KWS Infra Roosendaal-Sas van Gent. KWS wants to further develop this product in order to achieve 100% circularity.
SDG 9
This is the first time that this product is used by the Province of Zeeland in a roundabout. The next steps are the use of bioased binders and the replacement of the remaining crushed stone with circular materials.
SDG 12
3,750 m² of the old SMA cover layer has been milled and reused directly in the new SMA Circular cover layer. This optimizes the entire chain, because by reusing 50% no further processing of the released material is necessary.
SDG 13
The application of 50% recycled SMA leads to a reduction of CO₂ emissions and a lower ECI (Environmental Cost Indicator) than a standard SMA. Uue to a reduction in transport during the production and extraction of stony material.
“For a number of years, the Province of Zeeland has been working on the national Sustainable GWW approach and is also one of the signatories of the Green Deal GWW 2.0. “
“ In our projects we strive for more circularity and less CO2 emissions. For example, when developing our plans, we work with a CO2 Performance Ladder. In addition, we work with the Environmental Cost Indicator (MKI) when choosing materials. “
“Partly thanks to MKI, for the Kerkwerve roundabout (N655) project, an SMA top layer with 50% recycled asphalt was chosen for the first time. This gives a CO2 reduction compared to normal asphalt. “
