Roundabout N253

In 2019, the Province of Zeeland decided to construct a roundabout in the N253 near Sint Anna Ter Muiden.

The N253 connects the Netherlands to Belgium and is an important access road for (tourist) visitors to Sluis and the freight traffic on the Terneuzen – Zeebrugge route.

The aim of the roundabout is to improve road safety and traffic flow.

Summary

Contracting Authority: Province  of Zeeland

Contractor: KWS infra bv

Period: The contract was awarded in September 2019 and completed before December 20, 2019.

Biobased products:
Concrete floor, Reflector boards, Protecting blocks, Picnic set, Floor tiles

The biobased products contribute to the SDGs

positive impact measured

The indicators to meaure the impact are based on the NPR-CEN/TR 16208 for biobased products.  For circularity, these are based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) ISO 14040/14044 and calculation methods in accordance with SBK Assessment Method Environmental Performance Buildings and Structures.

Indicator 1

% of renewable materials in the product

biodegradable fraction from agriculture,  forestry, aqua culture, industrial waste household waste

CEN/TR 15932 Biobased carbon content

Indicator 2

Insight into the MKI value of the project.

The environmental cost indicator provides insight into the lowest environmental impact. DuboCalc is a tool developed by the Waterboard.

Indicator 3

Suitability in the natural environment.

By taking into account the flora and fauna present in the area. Strengthening natural values in the area and improving water management.

Indicator 4

Limit nuisance during construction phase.

Tender

The sustainable award criteria had to be made smart for the following components:

  • Environmental costs (MKI) as a result of the material choice and working method in the realization phase.
  • Provide insight into the application of products made from biobased materials.
  • Technical suitability in the area.
  • Ensuring a safe passage of traffic during the term and limiting nuisance to the surrounding area.

sELECTED

The winning offer included 5 biobased products. These products come with the Bio Bound Take Back System certificate. This ensures that the products are taken back at the end of their useful life to be processed in new Bio Bound concrete products or in other recycling initiatives. In addition, low maintenance grass is used, which means that 40% less has to be made.

“For the N253 roundabout, we have chosen to apply the environmental cost indicator (MKI) to compare the environmental impact with the reference design. This gave offering parties the option to come up with innovative proposals. KWS has offered a solution whose MKI is 60% lower than the reference due to an innovative design that makes optimal use of the existing road structure. ”
