N662 ROUNDABOUT A58
At the southern junction A58 Oost Souburg / Ritthem, the Marie Curieweg connects to the Ritthemsestraat. This intersection will have a different traffic function in the future as the intensities will increase as a result of various spatial and infrastructural developments (such as the arrival of the Judicial Complex).
In addition, an accident analysis by Rijkswaterstaat has shown that it is desirable to design this intersection in a more traffic-friendly way. The task is to develop a road-safe solution that can handle future traffic flows.
A good solution to get this intersection traffic-safe and to give it a better flow is through the construction of the roundabout.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Client: Province of Zeeland
Contractor : KWS Infra B.V. Roosendaal
Period: The contract was awarded in November 2021. Completion end of 2022.
Activities: the realization of a roundabout, redevelopment of the Ritthemsestraat, replacement of a culvert, reconstruction of the Zandweg and renovation of the entire main carriageway of the provincial road N662 including removal of a parking strip and two insertion lanes.
Type of tender: public tender, award best price quality (BPKV).
THis project CONTRIBUTES TO THE FOLLOWING SUSTAINABLE GOALS, THE SO-CALLED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG)
3.6
A roundabout is the safest form of intersection, because it has fewer conflict points, a lower speed and a smaller impact angle than a conventional intersection. Roundabouts are also safer for cyclists and pedestrians than other forms of intersection.
7.2
During construction, solar panels were used for the lighting. This generates sustainable energy for direct use. The advantage is that no connection was required for the temporary lighting masts during the evening and night.
9.4
In order to gain experience with a sustainable innovation, the first plastic road (CL version) was applied to this project in Zeeland. 47 meters of cycle path have been constructed, which saves 50% CO2 compared to a traditional variant (LCA).
12.5
During the construction, the reuse of raw materials was stimulated by awarding on MKI. In this work, asphalt with PR Partial Recycling, concrete granulate as a foundation and bicycle path elements made of recycled plastic were used. The project has an MKI value that was 40% lower than the reference.
13.2
By working with emission-free machines, CO2 emissions during work are minimized. For the execution of this work, an electric asphalt spreading machine, excavator and loader crane were used. This saves 16 tons of CO2 and the noise emission during work is low.
TENDER
In the award, 4 quality elements were rewarded with a fictitious discount on the registration fee:
1. Environmental management
2. CO2 ambition
3.Use of electric mobile tools
4. Environmental cost indicator
The level of the environmental cost indicator (MKI) value is a measure of the environmental impact of a civil engineering work. The lower the MKI value, the less environmental impact.
OFFER
The work has been awarded to KWS Infra B.V. in Roosendaal. At the time of registration, this contractor had a good plan of action (phasing and environmental plan), a high level of ambition with regard to the CO2 performance ladder, a maximum score on the use of electrical equipment and a low total MKI value.

“I am proud that with this project we have achieved a lot in the preparation and implementation with regard to circularity and the scoop to add the demand for the use of electrical equipment to the contract and thus also to reward this.”
“We have used our own 100% electric asphalt spreader. The advantages of the machine in terms of durability are great. There are no local emissions of CO2 or particulate matter and this directly contributes to the improvement of the living environment, wherever the machine is used.”
“Alone you go harder together you get further”
Together with the Province of Zeeland, we can be proud of what we have achieved in this project in the field of sustainability. In addition to the savings on CO 2 emissions, I am very proud that we are going to build the first plastic road in this beautiful Province.
“In this project, we made an MKI calculation based on the specifications and challenged the market to reduce it, in addition to CO2 and emission-free transport.”
